Hungary has held a day of mourning as it buried the 1950s national football legend Ferenc Puskas.

Thousands attended a memorial service at the national stadium named after Puskas in the capital, Budapest.

Large crowds then followed the coffin on a horse-drawn carriage to Budapest's Heroes Square.

The procession stopped there for a salute for the "Galloping Major" - because of his military rank in Hungary's armed forces.

Mourners then lit candles outside St Stephen's Basilica, before a funeral service for the prolific goal-scorer.

Puskas was buried in the basilica after a Roman Catholic Mass.

Puskas captained Hungary's famed Magical Magyars national team in the 1950 and later played for Real Madrid.
