In pictures: Fresh anti-Pope protests

The protests have sparked a tightening of security around Christian sites in Israel and the Palestinian territories, as can be seen at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.

A number of churches in Palestinian areas have been attacked. This one in the West Bank town of Tulkarm was gutted by fire.

Security has also increased in Italy and the Vatican City. Here pilgrims attending a Mass at the Pope's summer residence Castel Gandolfo are thoroughly searched.
