Mount Merapi looms over the landscape of central Java. In recent weeks, Merapi has become increasingly active, with signs pointing to an imminent and major eruption.

Merapi is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, producing major eruptions roughly once a decade. The last fatal explosion was in 1994, when 60 people were killed.

Erick Danzer climbed the mount Merapi as it was rumbling on. "Inside the main Merapi monitoring post, a volcanologist watches for tremors that may signal an imminent eruption.

"People living on the slopes have been told to be ready for evacuation and emergency shelters have been set up. Many stay in camps overnight and return during the day.

"Around Merapi, villagers' homes have been converted into posts for monitoring and rescue teams.

"Appointed by the Sultan of nearby Yogyakarta as the official mystic and gatekeeper of Merapi, Pak Marijan has special gifts for interpreting Merapi's moods.

"For many villagers around Merapi, life goes on as normal. People remember the widespread looting during the last eruption and are reluctant to leave their homes."
