Ethiopian student Biniam, 19, took these pictures to show how his city in the east of the country, Dire Dawa, was devastated after the Dechatu river burst its banks.

The floodwaters swept away families and homes. Some 250 people died and rescuers are looking for another 250 people who are still missing.

Thousands of Dire Dawa's estimated 250,000 residents have been displaced by the flooding. The floods also swept away vehicles and livestock, and destroyed markets and shops.

Telephone and electricity lines were damaged. The main road to the capital, Addis Ababa was cut off complicating rescue efforts.

Distributing aid is proving to be a struggle. Especially as many other parts of Ethiopia are also affected by flooding.
