The mudslide followed 10 days of heavy rains, and a reported minor earthquake.

Television images showed a wide swathe of mud where houses once stood in Guinsaugon, in the town of St Bernard on the island of Leyte.

Only 83 people have been found alive, and 19 dead, but Red Cross and military officials say between 1,500 and 2,500 may still be buried.

President Gloria Arroyo has ordered the coast guard and navy to the island of Leyte, and a US vessel is on the way.
