Michael Palin has played down reports he is to stop making travel programmes. It all began in 1988 when he recreated the fictional trip undertaken by Jules Verne's hero Phileas Fogg in Around the World in 80 Days.

In 1991 Palin spent five months travelling Pole to Pole. "When we returned I was adamant that this was the last travel documentary I was ever going to do," he said.

Palin's 1997 series, Full Circle, saw him circumnavigate the Pacific Rim in what he described as "the richest, longest, most ambitious and most exhausting of all the journeys".

In 1999, Michael Palin's Hemingway Adventure marked the centenary of the author's birth by recreating his travels in Europe, Africa and Cuba.

In 2001, the Sahara series took Palin on an epic expedition across the desert, from the shores of the Mediterranean to Timbuktu in Mali, West Africa.

Last year's Himalaya saw Palin negotiating the Earth's greatest mountain range. "If at times it was hell, the hell was always beautiful," he said.
