Some 200,000 people gathered in Tel Aviv to mark the 10th anniversary of the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

Many held candles and peace banners in Rabin square, where the Israeli leader was killed by a ultranationalist Jew.

A big number 10 was made up of candles ahead of the demonstration.

Former US President Bill Clinton later urged the crowd to carry through Rabin's peace initiatives.

Meanwhile, ex-Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres told his young compatriots that "peace is in your hands".

Many were unable to hold back tears, as the crowd listened to a montage of Rabin's speeches and sang songs in the name of peace.

Security at the rally was tight, for fear that Palestinian or Jewish extremists might make it a target for attack.
