In his two-day visit the Pope met members from all ranks of the Catholic Church in Scotland.

On 31 May he attended the Scottish National Youth Pilgrimage which packed Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh with a crowd of 40,000.

The following day saw nearly 300,000 people gather at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow to attend a National Mass for Scotland.

The Holy Father welcomed the "sons and daughters alike of this ancient nation".

He preached an inclusive message of "brethren in Christ" making a religious pilgrimage "together hand in hand".

On his visit the Holy Father also took time for his own private worship, here at St Mary's RC Cathedral in Edinburgh.

Crowds followed the Pontiff throughout his time in Scotland and turned out in force to wish him farewell at the end of the visit.

Pope John Paul II never returned to Scotland but is fondly remembered and went on personally to deliver his message across the globe.
