Labour conference 2001 - audio and video


Under the shadow of possible military action in Afghanistan, the Labour Party conference will be cut short. Prime Minister Tony Blair will be looking for strong backing from his party for his pledge to stand shoulder to shoulder with the US.

Provisional agenda for Labour's annual party conference

Tuesday 2 October

10:45am - 12:45pm:

NPF and NEC report on Britain in the world; European Parliament Labour Party fraternal speaker.

Speakers: Stephen Byers, transport, local government and the regions; Estelle Morris, education secretary.

14:15 - 17:30pm:

Parliamentary report; local government fraternal speaker; treasurer's report; auditor's report; NPF report on local, environment, rural affairs; NEC report amendments.

Speakers: Prime Minister Tony Blair; Alistair Darling, work and pensions secretary; Helen Liddell, Scottish secretary.

Wednesday 3 October

9:30-13:00am:

Conference opens amid tight security


The first day of the Labour Party conference at Brighton was overshadowed by the attacks on New York and Washington. The conference has been cut short; security has been tightened and delegates observed a two-minute silence, in memory of the victims. Outside the conference, a thousand peace protesters marched through Brighton.

The government says it has frozen more than £60m of UK-based assets which have been linked to the Taleban regime in Afghanistan. Chancellor Gordon Brown told the Labour party conference that tough sanctions would be introduced to enable the government to seize funds.

Benn warns against unilateral action
2 October

Mr Benn received a standing ovation

Labour veteran Tony Benn told the party conference any military action must be authorised by the UN Security Council and not taken unilaterally. Mr Benn received a standing ovation from delegates for what he said was "probably his last speech" to conference.
