Conference opens amid tight security
The first day of the Labour Party conference at Brighton was overshadowed by the attacks on New York and Washington. The conference has been cut short; security has been tightened and delegates observed a two-minute silence, in memory of the victims. Outside the conference, a thousand peace protesters marched through Brighton.

Brown clamps down on terrorist funds
1 October
The government says it has frozen more than £60m of UK-based assets which have been linked to the Taleban regime in Afghanistan. Chancellor Gordon Brown told the Labour party conference that tough sanctions would be introduced to enable the government to seize funds.

Benn warns against unilateral action
2 October
Labour veteran Tony Benn told the party conference any military action must be authorised by the UN Security Council and not taken unilaterally. Mr Benn received a standing ovation from delegates for what he said was "probably his last speech" to conference.
