Four killed in Greek train crash

Train crash in northern Greece A train has hit a truck and derailed in northern Greece, killing at least four people and injuring about 40 others.

The train was travelling to the city of Alexandroupolis from the port of Thessaloniki when it hit the vehicle near the town of Drama.

Two of those injured are in serious condition. Three of the four carriages derailed, trapping passengers.

Police said the truck apparently ignored a warning bar. Its driver and co-driver were among the dead.

'Caught fire'

The accident involving the passenger train carrying some 100 people occurred at about 2050 local time (1750GMT), some 3km (two miles) outside Drama.

Thessaloniki is about 350km north of Athens.

One passenger told local television: "The train was dragged across the track, people were falling on one another and the wagon I was in caught fire."

Fire brigade officials told the BBC the number of dead could rise.

In March another three people were killed in northern Greece when a passenger train hit a car on a railway crossing.
