Consultant paediatrician Andrew Holton was suspended on full pay from his post at the Leicester Royal Infirmary in June.
The investigation centres around the strength of drugs administered to young epilepsy sufferers.
A helpline has been set up for worried parents.
Leicester Royal Infirmary said it expected to consider a report over next weekend before deciding on Dr Holton's future.
Parents worried
A spokeswoman went on: "The investigation is focusing on the clinical practices surrounding Dr Holton.
"The majority of his work revolves around the treatment of children with epilepsy so that will form the basis of the review."
The hospital has been contacted by concerned parents after news of the doctor's suspension was released.
"We are advising them not to stop, or alter, the medication they are giving their children."
'Full co-operation'
The Medical Protection Society, which is representing Dr Holton, said the consultant had always tried to provide the best possible care for his patients.
A spokesman said: "Dr Holton is disappointed that concerns have been raised about his work with epileptic patients, an integral part of his practice as a consultant paediatrician.
"Dr Holton is committed to providing his patients with high-quality care and will co-operate fully with any investigation that is carried out in the hope that this area of his clinical practice can be properly and thoroughly assessed and the matter quickly resolved."
