The Monica tapes: Confiding in a friend

The Monica tapes: Confiding in a friend
Highlights from the Lewinsky tapes - 37 recordings made over 22 hours of telephone conversations between the former White House volunteer and her one-time confidante Linda Tripp. BBC News Online brings you the key moments from the covertly recorded tapes which form the backbone of Kenneth Starr's report into President Bill Clinton.

'I never even came close to having sex with him'

"We didn't have sex, Linda, we fooled around." To have sex, is having intercourse, Monica Lewinsky argues. If orgasm constituted sex, "then I had sex with a lot more people".

'I never expected to feel this way'

Miss Lewinsky tells Linda Tripp about her feelings toward the President. "I saw somebody totally different than I had expected to see. And that is the person I fell in love with."

'I'd rather you had it in your possession'

Linda Tripp tells Miss Lewinsky to keep "that dress" as DNA evidence can be matched even 10 years later.

'This is to much for one person'

Monica Lewinsky breaks down in tears, and tells Mrs Tripp that she cannot bear it any more.

'I am going crazy'

Miss Lewinsky tells about her feeling depressed. "I need medication," she says.

'I was brought up with lies'

Miss Lewinsky tells Mrs Tripp that in certain circumstances she would not refrain from lying. "I would lie on the stand for the sake of my family," she says.

'I just need to get out of [my job]'

Miss Lewinsky is desperate to get a promotion, and even considers quitting if it takes too long. She also complains about Ms Betty Currie's promised support being a "bone".
