Travel restrictions not approved

People in Jersey will not face tighter restrictions when travelling to and from the UK.

The UK government had wanted tighter border controls to reduce illegal immigration and cross-border crime.

But the Home Office has now accepted an amendment which means people can continue to travel freely.

"We shouldn't have to take a passport any more than someone from the Isle of Wight," Jersey's Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur said.

"We're part of Britain. You may need to carry a passport for an airline, but that's a different matter.

"The reason for doing it is a sensible one and Jersey supports that, but it was the way they were going about it which caused concern and cut across some of our constitutional privileges."
