New water law to protect supply

A new law to protect Jersey's natural water resources has come into effect in the island.

It aims to ensure enough water will be available for people to drink, as well as for industry, agriculture and recreation.

It also stipulates the development of long-term strategies to minimise the negative impacts of climate change.

Anyone using wells or bore holes for their water supply will also now need to register them with the States.

That is so an accurate picture can be drawn by the Environment and Planning department of the water resources available to the island.
