FBI helps money-laundering teams

Agents from the USA's Federal Bureau of Investigation are in Jersey to help the island's anti money-laundering teams.

They are working with Jersey Police's Financial Crimes Unit and the enforcement division of the Jersey Financial Services Commission.

The FBI visits the island each year to provide a range of training sessions about what areas of finance might be vulnerable to money launderers.

This year, officers will look at how to detect and fight mortgage fraud.

The financial crimes unit said although such crime was currently not a major problem, vigilance was necessary as targeted companies could be left with a large burden of debt.

It said the island had a close working relationship with the FBI, adding that the international nature of financial crime meant worldwide co-operation was vital between the teams that fight it.

One of Jersey's most senior police officers, Supt Shaun du Val, travelled to the FBI's Quantico Academy in Virginia last year for training on high-profile criminal cases and counter-terrorism.
