Referendum and vote may be 'hard'

Holding a referendum about switching to Central European Time (CET) on the same day as the Senatorial Elections could be difficult, politicians have said.

Senator Jimmy Perchard wants islanders to be able to have their say in a referendum on the same day as the senatorial elections on 15 October.

But the Constables' Committee said votes may have to be held in different places for logistical reasons.

This is because voters would appear on two different registers.

The committee has asked all States members to bear the matter in mind when the issue goes to the chamber.

Finance centre

If a change to CET is approved, it would mean moving clocks forward by an hour in line with France. Those in favour claim it would give people longer evenings to enjoy.

However some opponents have said, as a finance centre, Jersey would be unwise to be an hour ahead of UK businesses.

The island's Chief Minister Frank Walker has said the issue would be a good topic for a referendum.

The States of Guernsey has also been considering changing to CET.
