Girl 'critical' after house fire

A three-year-old girl is in a critical condition after being rescued from a house fire in Jersey.

The fire is thought to have started in an airing cupboard of the terraced house on Mont Cochon in St Helier.

The girl and her mother, who is in her 30s, were found unconscious by fire fighters and resuscitated before being taken to hospital.

The mother is in intensive care and her daughter has been transferred to Southampton for further treatment.

A man who tried to rescue them was treated for smoke inhalation.

Neighbour Cidalia Gomaes said she woke up at about 0400 BST to hear a man shouting.

"I could hear a man saying, 'There is fire in the house, can someone please help us'," she said.

"We went to the window and looked outside and saw smoke coming out from the door."
