Prison reform group starts visit

A group that campaigns for prison reform is starting its review of the way Jersey deals with young offenders.

The Howard League for Penal Reform will visit the Greenfields centre for young offenders, the juvenile wing of La Moye Prison and attend the Youth Court.

They will then make recommendations for improvements.

The Howard League was invited by the former Health Minister, Senator Stuart Syvret, following concerns about the existing system of care services.

After Senator Syvret was sacked from his post the invitation was honoured by his successor Senator Ben Shenton.

Andrew Neilson, assistant director of the Howard League group, said there were a number of concerns including the way children are treated when they misbehave while in custody.
