No punishment over Syvret speech

Jersey's former health minister will not be punished for disobeying the Bailiff at the last States sitting of the year.

This year Senator Stuart Syvret used the traditional Father of the House speech to discuss alleged cases of historic child abuse.

And when he was asked to refrain by the Bailiff he refused to do so.

The privileges and procedures committee condemned his behaviour but said it would not take any action against him.

The committee said he brought the States into disrepute by deliberately breaching standing orders.

It said instead they standing orders relating to disorderly conduct would be reviewed and it may bring forward new laws on them.

The historic abuse allegations are currently being investigated by police.
