Anti-GST campaigner visits island

Jersey has approved the introduction of GST, although some exemptions are still to be debated by the States.

The tax will only be introduced in Guernsey if Treasury and Resources thinks it is necessary.

As part of his fact-finding mission, Constable Simon Crowcroft will meet Treasury Minister Lyndon Trott.

Mr Crowcroft is one of the organisers behind a petition to defer the introduction of GST which will go before Jersey States in November.

From 1 May 2008 an extra 3% will be added to most goods and services including clothing and food.

Supporters of the tax argue it is necessary to fill an expected multi-million pound financial black hole brought about by a new low-tax system for businesses.
