Guide book boosts Manx language

Work to preserve the Manx language has been given a boost with the publication of a new guide book.

'Practical Manx' was launched at The Manx Museum in Douglas on Monday.

Written by Jennifer Kewley-Draskau on behalf of the Centre for Manx Studies, the book covers the grammar, spelling and pronunciation of Manx Gaelic.

According to the author, it provides a broad spectrum of Manx in use over the centuries - from translations of 15th century text to present day poetry.

A spokesperson for the Centre for Manx Studies said: "It is an indication of a healthy language that a new book on Manx grammar is now necessary.

"We are really pleased that the book has been published as the Manx language is widely seen across the Isle of Man as part of our identity."

The book has also been praised by the President of Tynwald, the Honourable Noel Cringle, MLC, who described it as being "of considerable benefit" to all those interested in Manx history.
