Substance abuse help book updated

A guide for Manx people seeking help with drug and alcohol misuse has been updated with new information.

The government-produced Family Fact Guide promotes understanding of the risks and effects of drugs and alcohol.

It lists support agencies' latest contact details and also explains the best ways for parents to talk to their children about tackling such issues.

Copies are available from the Department of Education, in Upper Church Street, Douglas.

To further help educate Manx youngsters and their parents about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse, the government will be running roadshow events across the island.

Margaret O'Reilly, director of drug and alcohol policy and research for the Manx Department of Home Affairs, said: "The onset of the new school year is a good time to remind parents and others about the availability of the Family Fact Guide.

"It has proved to be a very useful source of information and since its publication we have received a lot of positive feedback from members of the community.

"People say they have found the guide to be extremely comprehensive and helpful, with some useful tips on how best to communicate with young people.

She added: "Information can be the most effective tool when you want your children to be aware of the potential dangers associated with issues such as drug-taking or binge drinking."
