Plans for velodrome turned down

Onchan Commissioners put Nivison Stadium in Onchan Park out to tender to companies wanting to develop the site.

The Isle of Man Cycling Association wanted to invest £500,000 into the venue to turn it into a velodrome.

However, the Commissioners decided to grant the renewed seven-year lease to Onchan Raceway.

Steve Shimmin, spokesman for the Isle of Man Cycling Association, is disappointed at the decision.

"We hear so much from central government and local government that they are keen to provide health-based activities within the community.

"The impression is that the health of the nation and activities for young people is of prime importance but this doesn't send out that message. This is totally contrary to that message."
