German bunker repairs completed

Work to repair an old German World War II bunker and part of coastal defences in Guernsey has finished in time for the start of the summer holidays.

Contractors demolished the existing 65ft (20m) wall of the Casemate bunker at the southern end of Cobo Bay.

A reinforced concrete retaining wall was built along with a new apron around the base of the existing structure.

The work was carried out because it was feared the wall was moving away from the bunker and might one day topple.

The area behind the new retaining wall will be filled with top soil and re-seeded later this month and new railings will be installed at the top of the wall.

A number of partially-submerged bunkers were built during the German occupation of the island and have now been incorporated into the island's coastal defences along the shoreline.

Jenny Trasker, deputy minister for the environment department, said: "The department is delighted that the works have been completed in time for the school summer holidays.

"Cobo is a very popular beach and this area is particularly well used by families and swimmers so we're very pleased that the area can be enjoyed again as usual.

"The weather has been relatively kind during the project which helped to keep the construction works to schedule."
