Fire discovered in hospital ward

A ward at Princess Elizabeth Hospital in Guernsey had to be evacuated on Thursday night after a small fire.

Seventeen patients were moved to safety when the fire was found in a side room in De Saumarez Ward at about 2115 BST.

A States spokesman said ward staff immediately instigated evacuation procedures and contacted Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service.

No-one was injured and the majority of patients were able to return later to other areas of the medical ward.

David Hughes from Health and Social Services said the fire had been dealt with in an exemplary fashion.

"We have procedures in place for such events, together with regular fire training for staff, and these were followed to the letter," Mr Hughes said.
