Complaint over new school lights

Traffic measures in the area surrounding two new Guernsey schools have been described as "horrendous" by a local business owner.

St Sampson's High and Le Murier schools are due to open next week.

Changes were made to the surrounding traffic system, including new traffic lights at the schools' entrance, to maximise road safety for pupils.

Businessman Ivan Ogier is critical of the delays that he claims these are causing for other road users.

"What I've noticed from these lights is that they've given the school priority, because every time I come down the road towards the main entrance to the school they change to red."

"There's 24 hours in the day, the school occupies about 10% of that time, but businesses and residents are having no say whatsoever."

A spokesman for the States Travel, Traffic and Transport department said there had been a technical problem with the new lights but it had now been fixed.

St Sampson's High School will provide modern facilities for up to 720 students between the ages of 11 and 16.

Le Murier Special Needs Secondary School will accommodate up to 130 pupils with a range of learning difficulties between the ages of 11 and 16, although in some cases pupils may remain at school until they are 19.
