Guernsey's three mobile phone operators will be able to provide enhanced "3G" services in the near future due to the relaxation of EU restrictions.
The Office of Utility Regulation (OUR) can now use the existing second generation (2G) technology to operate the new third generation services.
The latest technology will allow users to access options such as the internet, at broadband speeds.
Wave, Airtel Vodafone and Cable and Wireless are all island providers.
OUR's director general, John Curran, said the move "should not lead to many more masts being required".
OUR has also announced that mast-sharing has led to an increase in radiation emissions from some of the Bailiwick's 66 masts.
However, an audit has shown that every site complies with the guidelines of the International Commission for Non-Ionising Radiation Protection.
Tests were carried out on all masts being used in April of this year.
