Time-change meeting is called off

Clock A public meeting to discuss Guernsey moving to Central European Time has been cancelled because organisers could not find anyone to argue against it.

Deputy Peter Roffey is bringing a Requete to the States to discuss the proposal and 13 deputies have signed up to the idea.

Some business leaders have said moving to a different time zone from the UK could be a barrier to new business.

But no-one has been found to oppose the plans at a public meeting.

It will now be left up to States members to discuss the proposals.

Environmental benefits

Mr Roffey raised the issue of a time switch during a States debate on the island's energy policy.

He said if the Bailiwick used CET all year round it would give more daylight hours and could have great environmental benefits.

CET is one hour ahead of GMT.

In an online survey of 425 people last month, 47% were against switching while 46.8% thought it was a good idea.

The petitioners have set a target date of March 2009 for the time change.
