Landfill charges to rise in 2007

Charges are rising at Guernsey's landfill site as part of a States' strategy to discourage the amount of rubbish being taken there.

About 50,000 tonnes is projected to have been dumped at the Mont Cuet tip in 2006.

A rise per tonne of rubbish for landfill comes into force on 1 January.

Mont Cuet tip is expected to be full by 2014 and the States is set to debate new plans to cope with the island's future waste in January.

A report before members recommends more recycling on the island and tendering for a plant that could deal with 70,000 tonnes of waste a year.

If approved by the States, a tender process could be complete by March 2008, with the plant up and running by 2012.
