Jewish graves in Romania wrecked

Romanian authorities say up to 200 graves in the Jewish community's biggest cemetery in Bucharest have been vandalised.

A spokesman for the Jewish community, Sergiu Rogosinschi, told the Associated Press that some of the most valuable monuments in the cemetery were damaged.

More than 40,000 Jews are buried in the graveyard in south Bucharest.

The graves include those of Holocaust victims, though none of these was apparently damaged.

Mr Rogosinschi said police had arrived quickly at the scene and had launched an investigation.

Romania has a small Jewish population of 6,000, most of them elderly.
