Terror suspects arrested in Spain

At least eight people have been held in Spain on suspicion of helping Islamic militants, officials have said.

The interior ministry said the arrests were made in Madrid, Barcelona and also the southern town of Algeciras, the Associated Press reports.

The suspects are said to be Moroccan. Some of them are believed to have given shelter to suspects in the 2004 Madrid train bombings which killed 191 people.

The raids were authorised by Spain's top anti-terror judge, Baltasar Garzon.

The arrests stemmed from an operation in 2005 in which police broke up a militant cell that allegedly recruited people to carry out suicide attacks against the US-led coalition in Iraq, the interior ministry said in a statement.
