Terror suspects freed in Germany

Two terrorism suspects arrested in a dramatic raid on a plane in Germany have been released for lack of evidence, German prosecutors say.

But an investigation is continuing into whether the two men were planning to carry out jihadist attacks.

The suspects, both in their early 20s and of Somali origin, were arrested last month on a KLM plane preparing to take off from Cologne-Bonn airport.

They were said to have left suicide notes at their flats.

The Bonn prosecutor's office said it did not have enough evidence to keep the two men in custody.

But it said that "prosecutors still assume that the accused continue to be under suspicion for having agreed upon a significant crime".

The suspects - a 23-year-old Somali and a 24-year-old Somali-born German national - were arrested on board a KLM plane on 26 September.

The remaining passengers were ordered off the aircraft for a baggage inspection.

The plane, which was bound for Amsterdam, was eventually allowed to take off after a luggage search.
