New Greek government takes office

Greek cabinet takes oath of office A new centre-right government has taken office in Greece, after the re-election last weekend of Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis's New Democracy party.

The new cabinet, which includes several senior ministers from the previous government, was sworn in at a ceremony in the presidential palace in Athens.

Mr Karamanlis has promised to tackle corruption and push through reforms.

Fears are growing that recent forest fires in Greece may pave the way for illegal construction projects.

Corruption watchdog Transparency International has said preventing illegal development on formerly forested land ought to be a priority for the new government.

Major challenges facing the government include the reform of pensions and the education sector.

Smaller cabinet

Sunday's election gave New Democracy party 152 seats in the 300-seat parliament, a loss of 13 seats since 2004.

The party's main opponents, the socialist Pasok party, also lost ground, falling to its worst result since 1977.

Smaller parties of the far left and far right made gains in polls overshadowed by forest fires that killed dozens of people in August.

Mr Karamanlis's new cabinet is slightly smaller than the previous one - the result of the merger of several ministries.

Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis, Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis and Defence Minister Vangelis Meimerakis have kept their posts.

An official accused of mishandling the response to the forest fires, Public Order Minister Vyron Polydoras, has been dismissed.
