Gang opens fire in central Paris

A gang of robbers are on the run after opening fire on police in central Paris using Kalashnikov assault rifles.

Police returned fire and a woman was wounded in the back during the clash early on Sunday on Boulevard de la Madeleine, French media report.

Police said three or four hooded gunmen opened fire after raiding a packed disco, where they had stolen about 1,000 euros (£677; $1,370).

The gang sped off in a car. Bullet holes peppered shops and cars nearby.
