UK diplomat attacked in Siberia

A street in Chita A diplomat was attacked while on a visit to Russia, the British Embassy in Moscow has confirmed.

Russian press reported that first secretary Nigel Gould-Davies, was assaulted on Friday evening in the Siberian city of Chita.

He received hospital treatment for minor facial injuries after the attack by a group of teenagers.

Russian police believe students celebrating their graduation could have been responsible for the assault.

Mr Gould-Davies told officers he could not identify the attackers because his glasses were broken during the assault, believed to have taken place during an evening walk.

A spokesman for the British Embassy in Moscow said: "We can confirm that an assault took place on Friday evening involving a British diplomat in Chita.

"We have been in close contact with him, and will keep in touch with him regarding any next steps."
