President Clinton has urged Bulgaria to remain committed to free market reforms and has promised that, if it does so, the United States will continue to provide economic, military and political support.
Mr Clinton was speaking to cheering crowds in the capital, Sofia.
He thanked Bulgaria for its support during the Kosovo conflict and said the country was an example to the Balkans of a multi-ethnic democracy which had avoided the communal strife experienced by some of its neighbours.
He also expressed support for Bulgaria's hopes of joining NATO and the European Union. The President leaves for Kosovo tomorrow later today, Tuesday on the next stage of his tour of southern Europe.
