The Western European Union defence organisation has confirmed that the former NATO secretary general, Javier Solana, is to be its last head before it is wound down in a year's time.
Mr Solana - also a former Spanish foreign minister - is currently European Union foreign and security policy chief.
He succeeds Jose Cutileiro of Portugal.
The WEU is being absorbed into new European Union defence structures; it was formed in 1948 but has been overshadowed by NATO.
