New Czech PM wins confidence vote

Jiri Paroubek The Czech Republic's new centre-left coalition government has won a confidence vote in parliament.

Jiri Paroubek is the country's third prime minister in nine months. The motion was passed by 101 votes to 99.

He was appointed on 25 April to replace Stanislav Gross, 35, who resigned after a long-running row over his family finances. He denied any wrongdoing.

Correspondents say the MPs' vote will not resolve tensions between the government and President Vaclav Klaus.

Mr Klaus, a co-founder of the opposition centre-right Civic Democrats, is fiercely opposed to ratifying the European Union constitution.

Mr Paroubek, who was regional development minister under Mr Gross, said his government would pave the way for holding a referendum on the EU constitution.

He is deputy leader of Mr Gross's beleaguered Social Democrats (CSSD), while Mr Gross remains the party chairman.

Mr Paroubek said the MPs' vote "practically ends the weeks of uncertainty we've had".

He highlighted the fight against corruption as a priority for his government.
