The Pope's visit to Britain in 1982 drew huge crowds wherever he went. During his six days in the UK he held mass numerous times in cities across the country.
28 May: The Pope arrived at Gatwick Airport where he bent and kissed the tarmac, before rising and giving a speech alongside Cardinal Basil Hume.
His first port of call was Westminster Cathedral where he held mass and met the Queen.
29 May: The narrow streets of Canterbury were lined with up to 25,000 people as the Pope arrived by helicopter to say prayers with Archbishop Dr Robert Runcie at the Cathedral.
The pontiff told the congregation of his happiness at visiting the cathedral, adding that it was a day "which centuries and generations have awaited".
Later the same day, the Pope met Prince Charles. They posed for photographs with Dr Robert Runcie on a sofa at the Deanery.
In the afternoon, a crowd of 80,000 gathered for mass at Wembley stadium in what was billed as the first of the Pope's "outdoor spectaculars".
They sang "He's got the whole world in his hands" and clapped their hands as he arrived in his "Popemobile".
30/31 May: The Pope went on a whirlwind tour of Britain. Over two days he visited Coventry - where he criticised the ongoing Falklands conflict, Liverpool, Manchester, and Edinburgh.
1 June: Pope John Paul II arrived in Glasgow's Bellahouston Park where he held a mass for a congregation of 300,000.
But his visit was not welcomed by everyone - around 1,200 people marched through the city's streets in protest.
2 June: On his last day in Britain, the pope held a mass at Cardiff's Pontcanna Fields.
He later went on to Cardiff Castle where he met the Lord Mayor, and finally to Ninian Park to speak to 35,000 young people about the "power of personal prayer".
