Spanish depot blast kills workers

Body of victim is removed from building A warehouse blast in the north Spanish city of Burgos has killed seven workers and injured several, some critically.

The blast happened in a building where machinery and fuel were being stored, the mayor of Burgos, Juan Carlos Aparicio, told Spanish media.

The warehouse was owned by a company working on a bicycle track for the city 200km (124 miles) north of Madrid.

The cause of the explosion, which happened at 0830 local time (0730 GMT), is still unknown.

Firemen said 15 employees had arrived for work at the building and were in the basement changing into their work clothes when a drum of fuel exploded, setting off a blaze.

The said some of the deaths were caused by victims breathing in toxic fumes.

The dead are reported to be all men, six Spaniards and one Moroccan.

Mr Aparicio told Spanish radio RNE the blast may have occurred when workers were handling a container of fuel.
