The United States and the UK are sending military reinforcements to southern Europe to enable Nato to step up its air strikes against Yugoslavia.

The UK is sending the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible. The seven Harriers on board will take the total number in the region up to 19.

The US Air Force is sending 24 F-16 Fighting Falcons armed with anti-radar HARM missiles, together with two more KC-10 refueling tanker planes.

Four more A-10 tankbusters attack aircraft are on their way to back up strikes on ground forces.

The warplanes will be supported by six more radar-jamming EA-6B Prowlers used to target enemy air defences.
