Blood story makes romantic list

Cecelia Ahern

A novel which pivots on the unexpected results of a blood transfusion has been nominated for the Romantic Novel of the Year prize.

Best-selling author Cecelia Ahern's book Thanks For The Memories is described as a "mind-blowing" romance.

The all-female shortlist also includes Canadian Susanna Kearsley and Linda Gillard, who lives in Glasgow.

A three-strong panel of judges will select the winner, which is due to be unveiled on 10 February in London.

Excellence

Lesley Downer, who has made the list with her novel The Last Concubine, said she was "thrilled and flattered" to be included.

"I grew up with Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice and hugely enjoyed creating a romantic world of my own," added the writer.

Judith Lennox is nominated for the third time, and said she will be "keeping her fingers crossed" to win the award.

Julia Gregson's nominated work East of the Sun was one of Richard and Judy's summer reads.

The award was set up in 1960 by the Romantic Novelists' Association to recognise excellence in romantic fiction writing.

Last year's prize winner was Freya North, who won with her novel Pillow Talk.

Irish writer Ahern is the daughter of the country's former prime minister Bertie Ahern.
