Birdie Song tops hall of shame

Teletubbies
It didn't even have any lyrics but the Birdie Song - the maddening tune which prompted displays of appalling dancing throughout the 1980s, has been voted the most annoying song of all time.

Aaaaarghhh!
1. The Birdie Song - The Tweets
2. Teletubbies Say Eh-Oh - The Teletubbies
3. Barbie Girl - Aqua
4. Agadoo - Black Lace
5. I Should Be So Lucky - Kylie Minogue
6. We're Going To Ibiza - Vengaboys
7. Grandma We Love You - St Winifred's School Choir
8. Shaddap Your Face - Joe Dolce
9. Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus
10. Lady In Red - Chris De Burgh

The irritating classic by The Tweets, which went to number two in 1981, fought off stiff competition from the Teletubbies and Aqua to claim the top spot.

The poll, commissioned for internet site dotmusic, was bad news for Kylie Minogue whose timeless I Should Be So Lucky finished fifth.

The singer, who went on to find more pop credibility and recently scored a number one with Spinnin' Around, was one of only two acts included in the top ten whose songs were not novelty hits.

Chris De Burgh was the other with his chart-topper Lady In Red.

Music fans might find them annoying but they still bought them - seven of the top 10 made it to number one, two were number two hits and one went to number three.

Kylie Minogue

Andy Strickland, dotmusic editor, said: "Every year the Ibiza season produces at least one song that is as irritating as it is catchy.

"While we wait for this year's answer to the Macarena or the Vengaboys, it isworth reflecting on some atrocities of the past. The Tweets are worthy winners of most irritating record."

While few would argue, everyone will have their own thoughts on songs which maybe should have made it to the list.

Where for instance was Rene and Renata's Save Your Love or Spitting Image's horrendously catchy Chicken Song and who can forget Gazza's rendition of Fog on the Tyne?
