Winslet up for European film gong

Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet is among the British nominees at this year's European Film Awards (EFAs), to be presented in the German city of Bochum next month.

The 34-year-old is up for best European actress for The Reader, the Holocaust drama that won her an Oscar this year.

Also cited in her category is newcomer Katie Jarvis, recognised for her work in Andrea Arnold's drama Fish Tank.

Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire is up for five awards, including European film, director and actor.

French prison drama A Prophet leads the pack with six nominations, including one for best European Film.

Competition

Slumdog Millionaire's Dev Patel faces competition for the best European actor prize from Steve Evets, star of Ken Loach comedy Looking for Eric.

Other British talents recognised include Slumdog writer Simon Beaufoy and its cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle.

Hosted by Germany every other year, the awards have been bestowed by the European Film Academy since 1988.

Last year's ceremony, held in the Danish capital Copenhagen, saw Dame Judi Dench receive a lifetime achievement honour.
