Jim Carrey comedy Yes Man is still top of the UK and Ireland box office chart, with Adam Sandler's fantasy Bedtime Stories also staying put at two.

Carrey's film, about a man who accepts every offer that comes his way, took £2.2 million between Friday and Sunday.

Bedtime Stories, meanwhile, took £1.8m in its second weekend on release.

Comic book caper The Spirit was this week's highest new entry at six, having made £1.3m since arriving in UK cinemas on New Year's Day.

The film, about a masked vigilante who fights crime on the streets of the fictional Central City, was one of six titles to make in excess of £1m over the first weekend of 2009.

Other new entries in the top ten included Kate Winslet's postwar drama The Reader in seventh place and the first instalment of Steven Soderbergh's two-part biopic Che at nine.

Winslet's film, directed by Stephen Daldry of Billy Elliot fame, is up for four awards at the Golden Globes on Sunday.

Animated comedy Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa rose one place to three, swapping positions with Baz Luhrmann's sweeping epic Australia.

Vampire romance Twilight held steady at five on its third weekend on UK screens.

This Friday sees the release of Slumdog Millionaire, a melodrama set in India that is already being tipped for Oscar glory.

Directed by Britain's Danny Boyle, the film has also been nominated for four Golden Globes.
