Shephard takes over Krypton reins

GMTV presenter Ben Shephard is to become the new host of cult quiz show Krypton Factor as it returns to TV after a 13-year absence.

Contestants will once again be put through mental and physical challenges as ITV brings back the show in January.

The original series, which ran for 18 years, was presented by Gordon Burns.

Shephard, 33, said: "The Krypton Factor is an iconic UK show and I'm really excited to be picking up the mantle from the legend, Gordon Burns."

One of the most memorable features of Krypton Factor was the army assault course contestants had to endure at the end of the competition, and this will be part of the revived show.

Participants will also once again be put through a series of memory, logic and general knowledge tests.

Michael Kelpie, executive producer at ITV, said: "To compete on Krypton Factor, you've got to be an all-rounder. You've got to be the best of the best, a combination of brains and brawn."

Shephard, who co-hosts GMTV, has also presented karaoke-themed contest Who Dares Wins and The Xtra Factor, a spin-off of X Factor.

He also won a celebrity boxing competition against singer Lemar, which was staged in aid of Sport Relief.
