Lewis beats Dido to UK number one

Dido and Leona Lewis

Leona Lewis's re-released album Spirit has beaten Dido's Safe Trip Home to the number one slot in the UK album charts.

It is Dido's third album. Her second, Life For Rent, was number one in 2003.

Lewis's Spirit first went to the top of the charts in November last year, but a new edition of the record with bonus tracks was released on Monday.

In the singles chart, Beyonce's If I Were A Boy has claimed the number one position knocking the X Factor's charity single Hero to second place.

Fastest selling single

Hero, released under Simon Cowell's record label Syco Music, featured all the X Factor finalists on a song previously covered by Mariah Carey.

Recorded in support of the charity Help for Heroes and the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, the track was the fasting-selling charity record of the decade and the fastest selling single of 2008.

US band The Killers climbed one place to number three with Human and TI fell two places to number four with Live Your Life.

In fifth place was Katy Perry with Hot n Cold, followed by Alesha Dixon's The Boy Does Nothing.

Up one place from last week was Girls Aloud with The Promise and the Guru Josh Project was eighth with Infinity 2008.

Close battle

Britney Spears's Womanizer was ninth place, three weeks after its release and Lewis's Forgive Me was a non-mover rounding off the top 10.

The former X Factor winner's album had a close battle to claim first position in the album charts.

Trade magazine Music Week reported first-day sales between Lewis and Dido were less than 500 units.

The Stereophonics fell one place this week to third with their best of album, Decade in the Sun.

Dark Horse, Nickelback's new album, went straight in at number four.

The other new releases in this week's top 10 was Simply Red's greatest hits, 25, which reached number nine and Beyonce's I Am Sasha Fierce followed at number 10.

Girls Aloud's latest offering Out of Control fell two places to number five and Kings of Leon's Only By The Night was sixth.

Last week's number one, Il Divo's Promise fell to seventh place and Pink's Funhouse was at number eight.
