Street's Thelma to receive degree

Thelma Barlow

Former Coronation Street star Thelma Barlow has been awarded an honorary degree from the University of Teesside.

Middlesbrough-born Barlow, 79, is best known for playing timid Mavis Wilton in the ITV soap for 26 years. She also starred in Dinner Ladies.

She received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Darlington's Lord Sawyer during a ceremony at Middlesbrough Town Hall on Friday.

Until now she was the only member of her family not to have a degree.

Honorary degrees were also awarded to mountaineer Alan Hinkes and Margaret Fay from One NorthEast.
