E4's zombie series Dead Set attracted 1.2m viewers in its opening instalment, according to initial overnight figures.
The drama, set in the Big Brother house and starring Jamie Winstone, picked up an additional 220,000 viewers on sister channel E4+1 an hour later.
It makes the programme E4's second-highest rated show of the year, behind an episode of Hollyoaks which aired earlier this month with 1.5m viewers.
The five-part series is written by the Guardian's TV critic, Charlie Brooker.
Dead Set was the most watched multichannel programme on Monday, and beat its terrestrial competition on both Channel 4 and Five.
Channel 4's documentary I Want My Dad Back, which reunited children with their fathers, averaged 700,000 viewers during the same time slot at 2200 GMT.
On Five, a repeat of Paul Merton in India pulled in 700,000 viewers.
BBC Two's Have I Got News for You pulled in 1.21m viewers, with news broadcasts on BBC One and ITV1 being the most watched programmes for the hour.
Dead Set is being shown all this week on E4 and features Big Brother host Davina McCall as well as former contestants from the show.
