Singers including Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo have commemorated the life of late tenor Luciano Pavarotti at a concert in Petra, Jordan.

Domingo and Carreras - who performed as The Three Tenors with Pavarotti - sang together for the first time since the Italian's death last year.

The singer's widow Nicoletta Mantovani and their five-year-old daughter Alice were also at the event.

Pavarotti is said to have always wanted to give a concert at Petra.

U2 frontman Bono was also at a memorial event in honour of the singer, and paid warm tribute to him.

The musicians were among those who made an hour-long trek through the mountains to the site of the ancient Treasury at Petra to honour Pavarotti.

Other famous names who took part in the three-day commemoration were Sting and Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.

Speaking on stage, Sting said: "Luciano was a big man, he had a big heart and that generosity was transformed in his voice, and when we heard his voice all of us were richer."

The event coincided with what would have been Pavarotti's 73rd birthday.
